Jumpin’ for Joy… We’re At The Big Texan!

Wednesday July 26, 2023

Now, the plan from the team meeting before bed was to depart at 8 a.m., but Goose had something else in mind. Just before 7:40 a.m., The Geese rolled up next to our pad with Gunner’s head peeking out the back window…we are ready to roll, C’mon Skinner!

Note: Goose basically just wanted to beat Skinner at something first thing in the morning. Ok, Goose… the race is on!

7:45 a.m.: Wheels Up. Before we hit I-40, I already suggested another change of plans… Why don’t we just get to Amarillo today and visit The Big Texan restaurant? I mean, you can’t head west without a stop in Texas…right? Emma called The Big Texan RV Resort and booked two parking spots side by side. Our plans were set.

The Skinners arrived an hour before The Geese. This is due to Emma’s addiction to stop at every boot and/or western store she spots on the road… Oh boy… we will NEVER make it to South Dakota on time!

The Big Texan RV Resort is fantastic for anyone looking for a fun overnight adventure! There are so many perks to staying there… From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily, they offer free shuttles in their “Texas Long Horn Limo” to get to/from The Big Texan Steak Ranch. The staff at the RV Resort is beyond friendly and fun. The park is easy to get to from I-40; it’s big rig friendly and offers an indoor pool, unique covered wagon and log cabins, big dog runs, and a JUMP PAD! Yes, more on that later!

We elected to clean up the bus, nap and get ready for an early dinner at The Big Texan.

They don’t take reservations unless you are a party of 6 or more, so we arrived right at cocktail hour (5 p.m.) to ensure the first seating. The most delicious fried mushrooms, tomahawk ribeyes, and cold beer settled in our tummies before 7 p.m. We opted for one more cold brew and a little touring of the famous steak house before jumping in our limo shuttle back to the ranch.

Now, you will discover that a final-final is a big must when you travel with Skinner… it’s the final drink after you have your first final. So, our final-final of bourbon over ice was consumed over at Goose and Emma’s trailer. We thought the night was over as we took Clyde out for one last walk. That is, until I just couldn’t handle the pull, drawing me to go over and jump on that large air-filled Jump Pad! I yelled for Emma, and in our pajamas, we jumped like high school cheerleaders, laughing (and thankfully not injuring ourselves) for nearly an hour.

By the way… it’s a great workout. I didn’t feel so guilty for that humungous slice of carrot cake we devoured during the final-final.

We had a team meeting before dinner… plan for tomorrow was wheels rolling toward Creede, Colorado at 7:30 a.m. Good Night!
